Dry skin, what is it? Also known as Xerosis, it occurs on our skin due to anonymous reasons which we are going to identify step by step. This condition is highly uncomfortable as it is marked by itching, cracking, and dry patches. Dry skin is a sign of dehydrated skin i.e. Your skin contents lack the right amount of water it needs to keep the skin moisturized. It does not always occur in the face region, but can occur anywhere on our skin affecting our hands, legs, or even arms. This is a natural phenomenon and happens to everyone, even if your skin tends to be oily, you can still face dry skin in a short occurrence of time which can create a problem.

This condition can affect our body and even make us under confident about our appearance but we should not let it grow over our heads and find the solution as quickly as possible. There are different types of dry skin that can occur to anyone.

What are the causes of dry skin?

There are several reasons which can lead to having dry skin some are as follows-

1. Ageing-

Ageing is a natural process and it is very common to have dry skin in old age. Our skin loosens up as we age and the elasticity weakens, leading to change in our natural skin.

2. Environment-

The climate we are living in makes a huge difference in how our skin looks. If we are not living in a clean and healthy environment it makes our skin look dull and even results in drying of it. Less moisture in the air can also lead to drying of the skin.

3. Genetics-

Family history and genetics play a major role in this. If there are symptoms of drying skin in your family history then it is quite common to see it appear in the next generations of that particular family. Hence, to deal with this one should consult a medical professional on how to prevent the drying of the skin.

4. Health-

If a person is suffering from a particular disease of course that disease is going to have side effects on our body. Certain illnesses like diabetes mellitus and even renal problems (Kidney related) can cause our skin to dry and have itchy skin.

5. Vitamin D- 

deficiency can lead to drying of our skin. Limited exposure to the sunlight can result in skin drying.

If we talk about different seasons, skin drying is more common to people in winters. In summers sweat glands or sebaceous glands (oily glands) play their role in helping to keep our skin moisturized so it is quite uncommon to have dry skin in summers but if a person has it it’s best to consult a professional.

 

Dry skin on face region can occur due to many reason like climate, chemicals in different products not suiting our skin, or even severe medical conditions.

How to tackle drying of skin- Remedies/ Treatments to try at home ?

1. Oils- 

There are different types of oils that are manufactured, the best recommended for dry skin is coconut oil. Coconut with its beneficial properties fills the pores being created between the skin cells and provides our skin the required smoothness. Using coconut oil daily in the affected area will show great results. Coconut doesn’t need any other supplement to be mixed with it as it contains the right ingredients which are beneficial for us in many ways.   

2. Food-

Food rich in specific vitamins and antioxidants minimizes the different toxic materials which we bring after visiting different places throughout our day. Some examples of such food items which can be used in our daily diet are-

  • Tomatoes
  • Carrots
  • Peas
  • Lentils
  • Spinach

3.  Shower-

Having a bath daily is a necessity and should be followed judiciously as it removes all the dirt and microorganisms which we get from the outside world. When taking a shower be careful not to use too much hot water as it can lead to severe burns on our skin causing it to dry. Redness, itching, and allergy can be followed if we use hot water while bathing. Hence, always set the right amount of temperature whenever using hot water for bathing.   

4. Moisturizers-

Moisturizers soothe our skin and provide the right amount of softness to it. This prevents drying of the skin and also stops the skin to crack. The best moisturizer which we can find at our home is Honey. Honey contains a lot of benefits and one of them is the hydrating effects it leaves on our skin. Honey can repair the damaged skin and regain its appeal. How to apply it on our skin, take a couple of tablespoons of honey and mix it with a little water, rub it on your skin and wash the mask after a gap of 15 to 20 min.

5. Outside-

When outside for work and you face dry skin irritating you and causing itchiness, then what to do is take a clean towel soak it in some cold water and gently dab it on the dry region. If you have any moisturizer with you or cream then apply it softly. Drink a lot of water and stay hydrated.

6. Follow a skincare routine daily for seeing results-

  • Clean your face
  • Moisturize
  • Hydrate your skin
  • Apply sunscreen if going out in a sunny weather  

7. Winters-

this is the season which causes the drying of skin in majority of people. So, its best to just stick to our skincare routine and follow it judiciously for better results.

Dry skin responds to our living circumstances i.e. how we are living, if we do not lead a healthy lifestyle one of the fallbacks we are going to face is skin drying. If it is severe then its best to consult a doctor to avoid any repercussions. Lotion, moisturizers and creams should be used regularly to smoothen the skin and provide juices to our skin to be at its best working.

Manage Dry skin with this routine-

  1. Bath regularly with warm water, dab a clean towel gently.
  2. Use moisturizers as it traps the moisture on our skin and does not let it dry for the rest of the day
  3. Wear clothes that are comfortable for your skin and does not lead to any irritation at the dry skin.
  4. Always check the lotions and moisturizers for any harmful chemicals and use only natural products.

How to identify which moisturizer or cream is the best one for your skin-

If your skin shows severe signs of dryness and is not recovering from anything it’s best to consult a medical professional and take the required medication for it.

A moisturizer should always be rich in vitamins like A, D, and E and also contain glycerin for smoothening and hydrating our skin. Aloe Vera, beeswax, sunflower seed oil, flower extract, etc are the things you should definitely look up to seeing a positive result for your skin.

Though dry skin may irritate us in the beginning and hamper our thoughts and work, we should not let it be in our way and start working in preventing it from its origin. Look out for early symptoms and try to manage them before it starts increasing in our skin region. Itching, redness, and patchy skin to be dealt with the proper medications with the help of a medical professional. If you follow a daily routine of skincare no harm will come to your beautiful skin.

Rise early, brush your teeth, freshen up and use a quality face wash to remove all the previous day’s dirt, and in the end, moisturize to smoothen your skin and prevent it from developing any dryness or itchiness in the future.
